Syllabus 

Unit 1: Development of Ability: How to “Listen” to Music?
  • Key Component to music appreciation.
  • Basic elements of music: melody, rhythm, harmony, scale, musical form.
  • Know-how: illustration on how to understand music better with the elements discussed above.

Unit 2: Introduction to Instruments and Musical Experience
  • Introduction to traditional Western musical instruments and their sound production— strings, winds, brass, keyboard, and percussion instruments.
  • Demonstration of orchestra and typical ensemble: Show a picture of orchestra with lots of instruments, point and ask if the students can recognize them.
  • Musical analysis: how to employ the knowledge of music theory, musical elements, performance practice, and other concepts to listen to a piece?

Unit 3: Music and Culture
  • The role of music in Western music history: sacred music and secular music.
  • The revolution of musical style: Medieval, Renaissance, Baroque, Classical, Romantic, Contemporary à show pictures of 

Unit 4: Music on Stage: Opera, Musical, and Film Music
  • History of theater: how music serve on stage performances from ancient Greek tragedy, Baroque opera, to Broadway shows and film music nowadays.
  • Music and Animation
  • Opera to Broadway 

Unit 5: Music as Entertainment and the Importance of Vocal Music
  • Music as entertainment in history: from the Classical period to now
  • The Importance of vocal music: different genres
  • Analysis and appreciation on vocal music

Unit 6: Western Classical Music: Renaissance and Baroque
  • Detailed Discussion on music from Renaissance and Baroque period
  • Appreciation and analysis on classic pieces
 
Unit 7: Western Classical Music: Classical, Romantic, Twentieth-Century
  • Detailed Discussion on music from Classical, Romantic, and Twentieth Century
  • Appreciation and analysis on classic pieces
  • Introduction to famous composers and musical genre from the Romantic period

​Unit 8: Review, Final Exam, and Graduation Ceremony
  • Final presentation by the students
  • Summary on the concept of music appreciation
