- Key Component to music appreciation.
- Basic elements of music: melody, rhythm, harmony, scale, musical form.
- Know-how: illustration on how to understand music better with the elements discussed above.
Unit 2: Introduction to Instruments and Musical Experience
- Introduction to traditional Western musical instruments and their sound production— strings, winds, brass, keyboard, and percussion instruments.
- Demonstration of orchestra and typical ensemble: Show a picture of orchestra with lots of instruments, point and ask if the students can recognize them.
- Musical analysis: how to employ the knowledge of music theory, musical elements, performance practice, and other concepts to listen to a piece?

- The role of music in Western music history: sacred music and secular music.
- The revolution of musical style: Medieval, Renaissance, Baroque, Classical, Romantic, Contemporary à show pictures of
