Syllabus
This course is for children of any age with an interest in learning to play a musical instrument. It will be a fairly comprehensive overview of basic music concepts including: recognition of different instruments and their sounds, music appreciation, reading music, and understanding a wide variety of basic musical terms used across a variety of musical instruments.
During the class, students will enjoy playing basic interactive mini-games and watching movie clips. After completing this course, they will understand basic musical concepts which should be very helpful for them to move forward with selecting an appropriate musical instrument.
Week 1: Introduction to different instruments (piano, strings, and woodwinds)
-Introduce different instruments: piano, strings, wind music
1. Name, picture, sound, famous recording clips.
2. Discuss different voices, differences, and favorites
-The introduction to different Musical Instruments combines a number of videos, pictures and even movie clips. These are to help the children create feelings of relaxation, happiness, and good memories.
-Games: The children are given the opportunity to touch instruments, strings, and pianos. The purpose is to hear and feel the differences between each. Teachers will also demonstrate how one touches the piano, violin and viola.
-Assignment: Listen to 3 solo pieces for piano, strings, and woodwinds of students' choices. We will discuss them in the next class.
Week 2: Demonstration of different rhythms
-Rhythm class: show different notes duration
-Play rhythm Games, write rhythm and recognize different rhythm patterns.
-Assignment: Recitation of rhythm and practice two new rhythms pieces.
Week 3: Understand reading and writing of notes in treble clef and bass clef. Review the rhythm patterns.
-Assignment:
1. Identify a new melody and write down the name of the notes.
2. Recitation of rhythm, practice two new rhythms pieces.
Week 4: Read and sing music pieces.
-Read the music and sing together.
-Assignment: Compose a song with four bars, and share it in the next class.
Week 5: Various melodies.
-Make music by taking notes and rhythms that we've learned before
-The teacher will play the students' works with different instruments including piano, and strings. The students will listen to their own works, and notice how the images in their minds change while during this listening experience.
-Assignment: Practice two new melodies, which are familiar to everyone, at home and sing them together in the next class
Week 6: Scales
-Learn what is a scale, and try to write different keys of scales
-Assignment: Write 3 keys of scales
Week 7: introduction to solo play, orchestras, opera and etc.
-Recognize the look and sound of the different instruments. Notice the sound of the combination of instruments. Learn to recognize the basic combinations of instruments, such as a trio, a quartet, a quintet.
-Assignment: Listen to the first movement of a symphony and a quartet, write down the piece’s name and discuss them in the next class
Week 8: Review
-Review the look of the instruments, their sounds, and the names of different combinations of instruments.
-Review scales: Identify and write
-Review rhythm: Recognition and composition
-Review melody: Sing together
-Let us now sing the music together... finish the lesson as we scatter the flowers.
